Blackjack on the big screen

Blackjack on the big screen

Blackjack has been a fixture at casinos and parties for centuries and its popularity has even made it to the big screen in multiple films and in numerous genres.

One of the most iconic films about blackjack is 1988's Rain Man. This movie tells the story of two brothers, played by Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman's character is autistic and has a superb memory, especially with numbers. Cruise's character is not too fond of his brother, but decides to bring him to the casino to play blackjack once he finds out about his hidden talent. He teaches him how to count cards and the two find great success while also becoming closer.

Another classic film about blackjack and gambling in general is 1997's, Vegas Vacation. Yes, the Griswold family is at it again in this slapstick comedy that has the main character and father figure, played by Chevy Chase, losing all the family's money after letting a blackjack dealer get under his skin, causing him to play till all the money is gone. Don't worry, like all good comedies this one has a happy ending for all.

The smash 2008 drama 21, was based off real life MIT students who, with the help of a crafty professor, were able to jet out to Vegas and count cards making them millions. Their teacher, played by Kevin Spacey, selected his smartest students and trained them how to count cards so they could do his dirty work because he was no longer allowed in casinos. Although the movie glorifies counting cards and makes it seem easy for these brainy group of kids, the act is actually much harder than it seems and it usually ends in people getting in trouble - even those with an MIT education.

Most recently, The Hangover in 2009, featured a group of friends heading to Vegas for a bachelor party only to wake up with one friend missing and foggy memories of the night before. One problem leads to another and the group finds themselves in a pickle. Needing to raise a significant amount of cash, the motley crew turns to counting cards to pay off their debts.

Blackjack's popularity has only continued to grow since is was first invented, and these movies may have played a part in its success. Now, many online casinos offer the game live, meaning players are able to talk and bet with friends or other real-life competitors, bringing the game head-on into the technological era.
